Podcast Insights: May

A brief summary of some of the topics that were discussed on the More Than Digital Marketing podcast, in May.
Podcast Insights: May

May was a pretty interesting month. From crowning a new King, to supermarkets battling over a caterpillar cake, it was an eventful month filled with interesting and exciting news.

So, let’s jump right in and take a look at some of our favourite articles from last month.

Caterpillar Cakes Causing Chaos

Aldi was at it again, as they took a hilarious dig at M&S and their beloved Colin the Caterpillar Cake.

Do you remember when M&S sued Aldi, claiming their Cuthbert cake was a copycat? Well, after a whole lot of legal back-and-forth, Cuthbert made a triumphant return to Aldi stores, via an advert.

They went all out with a King Charles III coronation theme, where a group of friends gathered for a caterpillar-themed party. However, things take a turn when Colin and Cuthbert meet, and a full-on brawl breaks out.

The ad wrapped up with the cheeky line, "Aldi. Like M&S. Only cheaper." They even threw in a little disclaimer about the cake prices, comparing M&S' £8.50 version, to Aldi's £4.99 doppelgänger.

This wasn’t the first time Aldi poked fun at M&S for the whole caterpillar cake fiasco either. Last year, they placed van ads outside M&S stores across the country.

People can't help but love Aldi's bold marketing moves, and it's no wonder. Their marketing director, Jemma Townsend, says “it's all about reminding shoppers that Aldi's own brands are just as good but way more affordable.”

It was a sly way of telling people that doing their shop at Aldi would have saved them a ton of cash. Talk about a winning strategy!

ChatGPT Faker Exposed

Moving on to something a bit more serious…

In a ground-breaking development, Chinese authorities have detained an individual suspected of utilising ChatGPT, to produce and disseminate false information online.

The man, identified as Hong, was apprehended after a fabricated news article about a local train accident caught the attention of cyber division officers in Gansu province.

The article had been posted simultaneously on a prominent blogging platform, and its shocking content gained a significant amount of traffic. This marks the first known case in China since the introduction of regulations targeting deepfake technology earlier this year.

An investigation revealed that Hong had employed ChatGPT to generate multiple versions of the same fictitious story.

While direct access to ChatGPT is restricted in China, users can bypass these limitations with VPN connections.

Hong faces criminal charges, with potential consequences ranging from five to ten years in prison.

This incident reflects China's concerns about the misuse of AI-generated content, and its commitment to regulating technologies that may facilitate the spread of disinformation or false rumours.

With Google starting to take misinformation more seriously, hopefully this sort of incident can be stopped before it escalates into something worse.

Will ChatGPT Replace Humans?

How about this for a segue?

As well as having the ability to create fake news articles about train crashes, AI tools like ChatGPT are revolutionising various industries, from writing and coding to graphic design and video games.

However, concerns have risen about the potential for these sophisticated systems to replace human workers.

A recent YouGov B2B survey sheds light on business decision-makers' attitudes towards AI and ChatGPT.

The survey indicates that 42% of respondents believe advancements in AI will have a positive impact on their business, with larger companies showing greater enthusiasm than smaller ones.

When it comes to ChatGPT specifically, 36% of those familiar with the tool believe AI text generation models can outperform human workers, while 20% think they can meet the same standards.

However, 39% express concerns that they are worse. Notably, 25% of companies knowledgeable about AI tools are considering using them to replace human employees.

Despite this, the majority (66%) are not planning such a shift.

As AI tools like ChatGPT continue to advance and gain popularity, it raises intriguing questions about the future of human work.

Are we on the verge of a significant transformation, where AI systems can outperform human employees in various tasks? What are the implications for different-sized businesses? Is the fear of AI replacing human workers justified, or are there opportunities for collaboration?

TikToker in Trouble

AI isn’t the only thing responsible for chaos last month. Turns out TikTok influencers were at it too!

TikTok influencer Mizzy, aka Bacari-Bronze O'Garro, has landed himself in hot water for breaking a court order related to a "prank" video.

The 18-year-old influencer made his appearance at Thames Magistrates' Court and firmly denied three counts of violating the court order. This order explicitly prohibited him from sharing any videos on social media without the consent of the people involved.

Unfortunately, it seems that he may have disregarded these restrictions, as two of the alleged breaches happened just a day after the court issued the order.

The charges against Mizzy involve posting videos on social media without getting the necessary thumbs-up from those featured, as well as paying unauthorised visits to off-limit places like Westfield Centre in Stratford and Hackney. As a result, he was temporarily locked up.

This incident should serve as a wake-up call about the responsibilities that come with having a social media presence, especially when you've got a massive following.

Social media is an incredible platform that allows you to showcase your creativity, entertain, and connect with others, but it also demands a healthy dose of accountability. Content creators need to be mindful of the potential consequences of their actions and play by the rules, both legally and ethically.

In a world where your online influence can reach millions in a blink of an eye, it's crucial for social media personalities like Mizzy to grasp the gravity of their posts and respect the rights and privacy of others.

This case raises some important questions about social media and personal boundaries. As social media continues to evolve, it's on all of us to navigate this digital landscape with integrity and genuine consideration for one another.
